Brushing your dog is important as brushing removes dead hair, dead and
dry skin and distributes natural oils for a clean, healthy coat. It helps to
keep your dog’s coat free of dirt and debris picked up from playing with dog toys in the park or
garden. Regular brushing also promotes a bond between you and your dog, as well
as, making you more familiar with your dog’s body which means you will notice
earlier if there is something wrong.
Is It Possible To Over
Brush?
You cannot over brush your pooch so you don’t need to worry about
brushing too much. However, different breeds of dogs need more frequent brushing
than others.
Short-haired and smooth-haired dogs do not need brushing as much as long-haired
dogs because their hair will not get tangled as often. It has been agreed by
many that a smooth-haired and short- haired dog will only need brushing weekly
but it will not harm your dog if you wish to brush him more often.
Dogs with short, thick fur will
need brushing several times a week, due to the thickness of the fur. A long-haired
dog will need brushing daily as the hair is more likely to become matted and
tangled. This is best for your long-haired canine friend as untangling their
coat can be painful to your dog and means you wouldn’t have to cut away matted
fur, depending on its condition. Therefore, regular brushing for long-haired
dogs is best.
When brushing your pooch you need to brush slowly and gently. If your
dog is unsure about the brush at first, let him see and smell the brush,
perhaps put one of your dog toys in
the room with him so he is distracted and encourage your dog by rewarding him. Rewarding
your furry friend means giving them dog treats when they have sat there without
fidgeting or one letting them play with one of their favourite dog toys. If he does fidget then stop
brushing but do not remove the brush; wait until your dog has become used to
the brush and then reward them.
